Volunteer Elaine Lewis wins Radio Bath Charity Award

Posted: 16th October 2025

Congratulations, Elaine Lewis, who has given 26 extraordinary years of volunteering and fundraising to RUHX since the charity (formally The Forever Friends Appeal) first began in 1999. Over this time, she has volunteered at countless events, fundraised, and helped raise the profile of the charity and the RUH.

At this month’s inaugural Radio Bath Charity Awards, Elaine’s tireless support was recognised by winning the ‘Adult Volunteer of the Year’ award. The event recognised the incredible dedication, compassion, and creativity of those who make a difference every day — from grassroots initiatives to established organisations that support thousands across our region. Hosted by Radio Bath, the ceremony shone a light on the stories and people who embody the very best of our community spirit. People just like Elaine.

Elaine generously gives the most precious gift of all, her time, and has volunteered at more events than we can count along with her friend Joyce. Her roles have included marshal at the Walk of Life and Glow Run, bucket collector at Movie by Moonlight and flag days and collection tin coordinator for her local area. Since January 2024 Elaine has volunteered at 6 of our charity events. If volunteering wasn’t enough, Elaine is also a dedicated fundraiser and has raised over £16,000 through her tribute funds for her parents, Winifred and Mervyn and her late husband, Emlyn.

Richard Gyde, RUHX Head of Operations, said about Elaine:

“I have personally known Elaine for 23 years, she is a truly special volunteer, and we are so grateful for the countless hours she has given to help our hospital and the local community. She always plays her part with a smile, even when that can involve standing for hours in the cold, rain, or blazing sunshine! Having volunteered with us for 26 years, she is one of our longest serving volunteers, if not the longest serving, and is an important member of our team. The Walk of Life really wouldn’t be the same without her in Bradford on Avon, cheering on and welcoming walkers. When we talk about being extra extraordinary, Elaine is exactly that, an extraordinary volunteer.”

Thank you so much, and congratulations Elaine (and Joyce!)
