Peter’s Marathon Walk of Life at 80!

Posted: 19th May 2026

This Saturday, RUHX supporter Peter  is joining us at the annual RUHX Walk of Life to “celebrate the RUH Bath keeping me alive!”

Peter is hoping to complete a marathon walk this year, despite having cancer, as a celebration of reaching 80, and still being relatively fit, thanks to the treatment provided at RUH Bath.

In 2017, he was involved in a road accident which caused 16 fractures and led to him spending 5 days in a coma. During his month-long hospital stay, scans revealed he had kidney cancer. Initially his infected kidney was removed, but unfortunately the cancer had spread, which has led to ongoing radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

“In my 30’s and 40’s, I used to run marathons, but since my accident, I have too many bits of metal in my legs for any running and have walked them since then,” reflects Peter.

Peter retired from the Army 32 years ago and this will be his fourth Walk of Life challenge. All money raised will go to support Cancer Services.

“I am aware that there is never enough money for health care, and when you are a patient in any hospital, you are not in the best frame of mind. Thus any extras, either in machinery to help diagnosis/treatment, or just making the hospital as welcoming as possible, makes for patients with a better frame of mind, and gives positivity to the care,” shares Peter.
