Derrick’s Robotic Assisted Surgery story…..

Posted: 14th January 2025

After 12 months of Robotic Assisted Surgery thanks to RUHX supporters, over 200 operations have been performed robotically, including major resections for colorectal cancer, but also simple and complex hernia repairs and various gynaecological procedures. We caught up with a patient to hear how it the treatment has helped their life. Introducing Derrick……

Derrick Farrell, a patient experiencing ill health for the first time in his life, faced a life-changing challenge in 2023 when he underwent robotic assisted surgery for a complex colorectal condition. He was one of the first 20 patients to be treated using robotic surgery at the Royal United Hospitals Bath (RUH) and his experience sheds light on the transformative potential this type of surgery has on recovery time, quality of life, and even family inspiration.

For Derrick, robotic surgery was an unexpected option. He entered the hospital with no prior knowledge or opinions about robotic assisted procedures. After consulting with his surgeon, Mr. Marc Bullock, Derrick understood that the technology offered benefits like precision, minimally invasive techniques, and a faster recovery time. These reassurances made robotic assisted surgery his preferred choice. Initially planned as a shorter operation with no expectation of a stoma, during Derrick’s surgery the procedure became complex, lasting more than 8 hours due to anatomical challenges like a narrow pelvis and tall height. This led to a temporary stoma being placed, a decision that Derrick now sees as life changing. Without robotic assisted surgery, the operation might not have been possible at all, and Derrick would have needed a permanent stoma afterwards.

Recovery involved significant milestones. Derrick managed a temporary stoma, underwent chemotherapy, and incredibly within just 4 months had his stoma reversed in a second surgery that also removed his gallbladder. In under a year, Derrick began feeling more like himself, grateful for the advancements that made his journey smoother. Comparatively, healthcare professionals informed Derrick that temporary stomas are usually reversed around 12 months to ensure adequate healing time – his was ready to be reversed in less than a third of that time. While he still experiences some mild, manageable symptoms, Derrick can lead a full, unrestricted life. He works, travels, and has adjusted to post-surgical changes with resilience and optimism.

“And that’s got to be down to, well two things really, the fact that [Mr. Bullock] couldn’t have done it without the robotic surgery, and that [the stoma] reversal was so, so much quicker.”

Derrick’s journey had a profound impact on his family, particularly his 17-year-old son. Inspired by Mr. Bullock and the innovative use of robotics, Derrick’s son is now pursuing a career in medicine. The surgeon’s influence and the cutting-edge technology provided a spark for a future generation of medical professionals.

“He’s a very good skilled surgeon. I’m very lucky to have that service on offer here, really… I’ve considered myself very lucky that I ended up with him and it was robotic surgery.”

Derrick’s story highlights the immense value of robotic assisted surgery in modern healthcare. His quick stoma reversal and ability to quickly return to normal life underscore the potential for robotics to enhance outcomes and inspire confidence in patients. Derrick considers himself fortunate to have been treated with such advanced technology by a skilled surgeon, and his journey continues to motivate those around him.
