“At the RUH we support around 240 children with Type 1 Diabetes and on average 30 new children are diagnosed each year. It’s a complex life-long condition that needs management 24/7. These children and families do not get a day off.”
Helped by amazing Paediatric Diabetes Nurse Specialists like Charlotte Pearce and Nina Roles a new diagnosis for a child and their family means a lot to learn. So with RUHX supporters help they’ve created these Diabetes starter kits for children.
When children are first diagnosed they stay here on the children’s ward for 5 days of education, learning a new way of life. They are taught:
– how to give themselves injections
– carbohydrate counting
– how to manage high and low blood sugar levels and much more.
“This is an intense period of education and at the same time families are having to come to terms with a diagnosis that would have come as a shock. So, as a diabetes team we wanted to be able to provide some fun items that could be useful during their inpatient stay, including a much needed coffee voucher for mum and dad! So we have created these diabetes starter packs in the hope that they make a difference to children and their families.”
Thanks to RUHX and our supporters for making this small and important impact to help new Diabetes Paediatric patients happen.
