A Royal opening – Dyson Cancer Centre officially opened by Her Majesty the Queen

Posted: 03rd September 2024

On the 3rd of September 2024, everyone at the Royal United Hospitals Bath was delighted to welcome Her Majesty the Queen who visited to officially open the new Dyson Cancer Centre. Her Majesty took time to meet and speak with patients and staff as she toured the centre visiting the Chemotherapy suite, Inpatients ward and Wellbeing Hub. As well as unveiling a plaque to commemorate the official opening.

The Dyson Cancer Centre is home to around 275 colleagues and cares for 342 patients every day and whilst the ceremony took place everyone involved took particular pride in the fact that, crucially, this official opening took place without having any effect on patient care and appointments arranged during the day.

Other VIPs also attended, including some RUHX supporters involved in empowering the new centre’s creation through all sorts of fund raising over many years. A proud day for everyone involved.

RUH clinical staff, some of whom were presented at the official opening, have been treating patients in the new facilities since late spring. They shared with Her Majesty and later, RUHX, how they have found the new centre is helping both staff and patients as we asked them “How have the new facilities helped you in your role better assist patients?”

“Accommodation for relatives / carers enabling them to have some rest and comfort yet be near to their loved ones of those who are critically ill or nearing end of life.”

Caroline Gilleece, Matron

“The new facilities are much more accessible for patients, especially those who are limited physically, as they can be easily dropped off for appointments and treatment which significantly reduces stress and is very important at a difficult time.”
Dr Rebecca Bowen, Medical Oncologist

“The new bone marrow room allows us to perform this procedure in a quiet, private and safe space. Previously we performed bone marrows on the day unit with just a curtain to provide privacy and dignity. The new room is so much better for the patients, their loved ones and staff.”
Dr Sarah Wexler, Consultant Haematologist

“A facility which is new and fit for purpose gives great confidence to patients and also a nicer working environment for staff is important in keeping up morale and staff retention.”
Professor Mark Beresford, Consultant Oncologist
