Healthcare has seen tremendous advancements over the past quarter-century—improved treatments, state-of-the-art equipment, and a more experienced and talented workforce. However, one thing that has remained constant is the unwavering support from our community in and around Bath. Thanks to your support, we’ve made countless improvements to the Royal United Hospitals Bath, resulting in better facilities for patients and their loved ones, more green spaces, and ultimately, more lives saved.
Your support never goes unnoticed by our staff.
To highlight the impact of RUHX over the years, we spoke with Liz, a Specialty Doctor in Stroke and Medicine, who started at the RUH in September 1999—the same month RUHX was born. Liz originally came from Australia for a six-month term in the Emergency Department. She found the department so wonderful and the people so lovely that she decided to stay. She’s been with us ever since.
2002 marked the beginning of the new A&E building refurbishment, a change well remembered by Liz. She recalls, “I remember the satisfaction of seeing the new space open. It was so much bigger than what we had before, going from a two-bedded high care area to six high care beds and four resuscitation beds.” By improving Liz’s work area, we not only made her job easier but also improved patient turnaround and reduced complications across the department.
In 2007, RUHX completed the fundraiser for the second CT scanner. Liz remembers this major improvement, saying, “Seeing the introduction of the second CT scanner in 2007 made a huge difference in our ability to quickly diagnose and treat trauma and stroke patients. Knowing we had a backup scanner allowed us to get patients into scans quickly, which is crucial for treatment and saving lives.” A donation to RUHX charity not only helps staff with their day-to-day operations but also supports the overall well-being and effectiveness of the hospital, ultimately benefiting the entire community.
Similarly, Lisa a Cardiology Pre assessment Nurse, also started at the RUH in 1999. She began her time within the ENT surgery team, later moving to Cardiac day care unit. Lisa herself has been part of raising funds for RUHX over the years for friends and those who need it most. Lisa recalls “It’s always nice to see so many people raising funds for the charity and you often see donations around the hospital of items that have been donated by the charity.” It’s great to be reminded donations can make an impact in all aspect of the hospital no matter how small. Staff do notice.
